San Antonio Adult Entertainment: AG discusses human trafficking and other crimes at San Antonio conference

Monday, February 28th, 2011

In one case, the Attorney General’s Special Investigations Unit and Grapevine police officers arrested a female and charged her with prostitution. After she was released from custody, the woman told the Attorney General’s Special Investigations Unit that she was a sex trafficking victim and identified her trafficker.
Dallas police officers and task force members successfully located and arrested Joshua Andrews, 39, and charged him with Trafficking in Persons. Law enforcement authorities connected the woman with crime victim advocates to help her recover from her trafficker’s abuse.

In one case, a federal jury convicted a defendant of trafficking young females for forced, unpaid prostitution – and sentenced him to almost 34 years in prison.
This spring, the Attorney General’s Office will assist the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Houston with another domestic sex trafficking case. According to investigators, six defendants coerced women and children into prostitution and transported them from Texas to other states.

San Antonio Adult Entertainment: Bandidos Arrested In Hondo Drug Roundup

Friday, February 25th, 2011

SAN ANTONIO — A yearlong investigation into the Bandidos motorcycle gang in Hondo resulted in several arrests and the seizure of drugs, weapons and cash, law enforcement officials said Friday.
During a news conference in San Antonio on Friday, officials said that eight Bandidos members were arrested Wednesday and two remained at large. Officials said that it would be a matter of time before the remaining two were caught.
Mauricio Fernandez of the Drug Enforcement Agency in San Antonio said that the Bandidos were selling methamphetamine and cocaine from California that was being supplied by the Mexican cartels.
Fernandez said the investigation, dubbed Operation Screaming Eagle, and the resulting arrests and seizures was a devastating blow to the Bandidos, who he said are a transnational crime organization involved in various crime activities, including extortion and prostitution.

San Antonio Adult Entertainment: Cop Gets One Year Sentence After Two Rape Charges

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

It seemed like a pretty solid case against San Antonio, TX, Officer Craig Nash. The rape kit turned up his DNA, and GPS put his squad car where his accuser said she was taken captive and then raped. Gotta love technology. The victim went to the police station immediately to report the attack. Not only that, there was yet another rape charge against Nash in 2008. Yet in a shocking plea deal, Nash was given only one year for “official oppression” (having sex with somebody in custody, consensual or not) and both rape charges were dropped.
As Criminal Justice blogger Elizabeth Renter points out, this “slap on the wrist” hardly represents justice. What is looks more like is blatant favoritism toward an officer, and discrimination against the victim, a transgender sex worker. Police abuse and negligence regarding a sex worker or transgender person is hardly anything new. The victim, meanwhile, is now in prison for illegally engaged in sex work. I couldn’t discover how long her sentence is for, but since Nash received such a light term, I wonder who will get out first.
